Dorothea Lange is a photographer who was born in 1895 who is best known for her work during the great depression. She was born into a german family in Hoboken New Jersey but spent most of her time in Manhattan's lower east side. She had some difficult times in her life, one of them being when she contracted polio at age seven which resulted in her having a limp for the rest of her life. Her father as well abandoned her and her family when she was just 12. She first recognized her love for photography in high school, which followed her into college and lead her to take a photography class at Columbia University. After the Great Depression started, she decided to move to California in order to be able to photograph the difficulties people that were living on the streets had due to the Depression. This is where she found her calling to be a "documentary" photographer.
